The Pursuit of Excellence in General Surgery

Mellon Medical has redefined the art of suturing in modern surgery. Traditional suturing demands multiple coordinated movements using both hands just to place a single stitch. The Switch® changes this entirely.
With a simple pinch of the thumb and index finger, the device transfers the needle automatically, eliminating the need for hand‑to‑hand needle passing. This breakthrough enables true one‑handed suturing, allowing the surgeon’s free hand to position and present tissue for optimal control.

The result is faster, more efficient, and more precise suturing, especially valuable in abdominal wall closure, laparotomy, and other high‑demand general surgery procedures.

In brief

The Switch® is engineered to deliver high‑precision suturing in significantly less time, helping surgeons achieve the best possible patient outcomes. Designed for demanding surgical environments, it serves as the suturing device of choice for surgeons performing complex procedures that require accuracy, consistency, and control. Through this innovation, Mellon Medical has truly reinvented suturing in general surgery and abdominal wall closure, offering a new standard in efficient, one‑handed suturing.

High precision

The Switch® ensures high precision suturing by keeping the needle securely positioned in one of its two jaws at all times. When the surgeon applies a single pinch to the double action buttons, the needle transfers smoothly to the opposite jaw. This controlled movement eliminates unnecessary hand repositioning and supports reliable abdominal wall closure.

The straight double pointed needle moves along a predictable linear path between the jaws. This behavior provides consistent stitch placement and supports modern suturing techniques that require accuracy and stability during surgical stitches.

Reliable and consistent

The Switch® is designed as a single patient use suturing device, ensuring that every procedure begins with a new, reliable instrument. This approach maintains consistent performance and eliminates the need for complex reprocessing, which is often associated with traditional surgical stitches equipment. The device supports multiple needle and suture combinations, providing flexibility for different surgical needs.

All operating personnel can safely and comfortably load the device using the Switch‑Aid® needle loader, which is included with every suture. Each set is supplied with a polydioxanone (PDS) suture, a widely used absorbable suture material valued for its strength, predictable absorption behavior, and minimal tissue reaction.

Ready to use-ability

The Switch® is designed with simplicity, usability, and intuitive operation at its core. As a modern suturing device, it combines smooth, natural movement with straightforward learning, making it suitable for surgeons at all experience levels.

Its thoughtfully engineered, user friendly interface allows the Switch® to integrate seamlessly into the familiar workflow of hand suturing. Surgeons can adopt the device immediately, without altering their established suturing techniques or procedure steps. This reduces training time and supports efficient use during abdominal wall closure and other general surgery applications. The result is smoother processes, improved consistency, and enhanced efficiency from the very start of each operation.

Saving Time

The Switch® is intuitive to use, and its simplified method is easy for surgeons to learn. By enabling one handed suturing, the device allows the surgeon’s free hand to position and stabilize tissue, which leads to more accurate suturing in less time.

As surgeons become familiar with the Switch®, the reduction in hand movements and the streamlined needle transfer mechanism contribute to significant time savings during procedures. This is especially valuable in high volume tasks such as abdominal wall closure, where consistency and speed are essential.

Optimal control

The Switch® is shaped like a pencil, which allows surgeons to rotate the device easily in the hand. This design provides natural and precise handling and makes the Switch® comfortable for both right handed and left handed surgeons.

The ergonomic design of the Switch® helps surgeons concentrate on the most important part of the procedure, which is accurate suture placement. After every needle transfer, an audible click confirms that the surgical stitch has been securely placed. This level of feedback supports confidence and consistency.

The Switch® is particularly suitable for abdominal wall closure, where stability, precision, and control are essential. This use case matches high volume keywords such as abdominal wall repair, small bites technique, and laparotomy closure.

Suturing with one hand

The Switch® is the first device capable of performing abdominal wall closure using the small‑bites technique in general surgery. Its main comparison is with classical suturing, which requires a needle holder and forceps, as both methods use a suture thread to approximate and ligate the tissue.

Although the initial market introduction focuses on abdominal wall closure, Mellon’s technology can be applied across a broad range of other surgical disciplines.
